Charles Codman, Master Mason Apron, 1822-1830. Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, Museum purchase, 94.054
Didn’t think I knew anything about Masonic aprons, did you? Well, you may be surprised to learn that my first point of intersection with this subject was way back in 2002, when I co-curated Charles Codman: The Landscape of Art and Culture in 19th-century Maine with Jessica Nicoll for the Portland Museum of Art. That exhibition featured this apron, attributed to Codman himself; the same apron will be included in the upcoming exhibition on Masonic aprons at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, formerly the Museum of Our National Heritage, in Lexington, Massachusetts. You guessed it: I’m editing the catalogue, and thrilled to reconnect with my friend Charles Codman again.
